The Role

This is an integral role, ensuring and enabling digital transformation across the entirety of government.

You’ll ensure the successful running of an ambitious programme of work with an annual budget in the region of £9 million. You’ll lead the delivery of standards and assurance across government in a fast-moving and demanding environment. You’ll exercise your judgement over a complex cross government transformation agenda in a highly politicised and demanding stakeholder environment.

You’ll report directly to Kevin Cunnington. You’ll have direct line management responsibility for the Heads of Security Standards; Service Design Standards; Technology Standards; and Standards Assurance with an overall indirect report in the region of 100 staff.

Main duties and key responsibilities

You’ll be responsible for service design for government - the creation of all overarching service design for government services that is implemented through the application of standards and their associated assurance processes.

Technology standards - driving forward Government Technology Standards through developing technology standards and an associated Code of Practice, curating government technology innovation and providing technology advice. You’ll be responsible for building government technology capability and co-ordinating cross government communities.

Security - agreeing a vision for securing technology services across government and establishing a “secure by design” service along with associated standards ensuring a robust, mature and responsive security delivery and operations capability. You’ll need to develop transformational security standards and guidance ensuring it is complete, responsive to departmental need and remains up to date.

You’ll support and assure departments on the production of safe, consistent, common, interoperable and shared security approaches. Working with departments to build sharable security-related services that achieve safe transformation and holding centralised budgets and releasing funds to departments to encourage this.

Service standards - driving forward Service Design Standards through developing a service manual and service design patterns supporting this with delivering service design advice. You’ll support building government capability, including developing and delivering training and associated materials working with the wider GDS Academy and coordinate and manage associated professional communities.

Service assessments and controls - leadership and oversight of the service assessment portfolio across government, acting as a point of escalation where necessary. Ensuring an effective programme of service assessments, managing the spend controls process providing controls, providing assurance advice and administering GOV.UK exemptions/approvals.
