Dear Candidate,

We are immensely grateful for your interest in the appointment of the Independent Joint Safeguarding Chair for Canterbury Cathedral and the Diocese of Canterbury

This is a hugely important role as we as a diocese and cathedral church within the Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion seek to learn the lessons of the past and resolve never again to allow abuse to be perpetrated by anyone acting or purporting to act in our name. Because the diocese has the Archbishop of Canterbury as its diocesan bishop and the cathedral is the mother church of the worldwide Anglican Communion we have an unparalleled level of responsibility to make sure we implement and follow the best practice to safeguard all who come to visit or receive ministry. This will be the first time that an independent and joint chair is being sought in Canterbury, so we are also breaking new ground in this level of cooperation.

We are seeking to appoint someone who can work in close partnership with us both sensitively and purposefully. Above all you will help to challenge us to dedicate appropriate resources and develop robust policies and procedures to serve our ministry well and safely.

We warmly invite you to consider the material that follows and assure you of our prayers for considering this appointment whatever the outcome of the discernment which is yet to come.

With our prayers and best wishes

Bishop Rose and Dean Robert
