Dear prospective candidate,

It’s my pleasure to Chair the Board and Council at SECAmb and to introduce you to the role of independent Non-Executive Director at the Trust. I hope you’ll be even more interested in the role after reading this pack.

SECAmb has been on the proverbial ‘journey’ over the past few years. I joined the Trust a year ago, when we were in ‘special measures’ (under intense scrutiny from our regulators, the CQC, due to subsequent poor findings relating to leadership, 999 performance and the quality of our services). The team have worked hard and fast to make improvements to our quality and corporate governance, and made significant changes to our systems, structures and the people involved. We’ve a new CEO who joined us in September from a high-performing ambulance Trust: there is still plenty to do.

Now rated ‘Good’ and out of special measures, our ambition is to be ‘Outstanding’ by 2022.

We are moving from a period of rapid improvement spurred by our regulator into a period of sustained improvement and growth driven by the Board. We are refining our strategy and, in turn, looking afresh at the mix of skills and experience on our Board of Directors that will steer us most effectively in this exciting period.

A Non-Executive vacancy on the Board presents an opportunity to define the qualities we need to bring us robust and informed scrutiny, challenge, and support where we need it. Due to the resignation of a NED (who was promoted into a full-time role that made his continued participation impossible), we are seeking someone with experience of clinical leadership, ideally in an emergency and/or urgent care environment.

You should have the recent expertise that allows you to understand, support and challenge the clinical issues arising from the services provided by the Trust. Board experience would be a plus (but isn’t essential) however the confidence and competence to challenge our Medical Director and Consultant Paramedics on the safety and efficacy of clinical decisions is vital. We would expect you to join our Quality and Patient Safety Committee (which meets every two months) to provide scrutiny there as well as attending Board meetings 11 times a year.

We really are proud to be part of the NHS and to continue to win contracts, such as our recent 111 Clinical Assessment Service across much of the South East, against fierce competition. Our strategy aims to improve our fundamental performance, and to lead within the emerging structures in the emergency and urgent care space, building on our strengths and geographical advantage (straddling the region) and technological advantage (business intel that is a barometer of the whole system, and IT/communications that manage access to urgent and emergency care).

It’s an exciting time, with lots to do, and we need NEDs who can provide coaching and clear and supportive challenge to our Executive, and strategic insight and energy as part of our unitary Board. Could this be you?
