Welcome

Thank you for expressing an interest in the role of Diocesan Secretary.

The Diocese of Oxford is a living, growing network of more than a thousand parish churches, chaplaincies and schools extending across Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes.

More than 50,000 people worship in over 800 parish churches each week and make a significant impact across villages, towns, cities and the world in their daily discipleship and witness. Together, our schools educate more than 75,000 children for life in all its fullness. Our chaplains serve Universities and schools, prisons, hospitals and the armed forces. Our churches support more than 1,700 social action projects, working in partnership with other agencies to serve the most needy in our region.

We are exploring together what it means to be a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God’s world: contemplative, compassionate and courageous. We have also begun to work on seven focus areas for the Diocese in this next period of our common life. We are facing significant challenges and opportunities across our region and we still have much to learn together, by the grace of God. You will find more details of our common vision process here.

We believe in partnership, whether it is between churches at local level, schools and parishes or working with communities and leaders of other denominations and faiths. We are part of the world-wide Anglican communion. We are committed to our long-term partnerships with the dioceses of Kimberley and Kuruman in South Africa, Växjö in Sweden and Nandyal in India.

The Diocese is blessed with many extremely able and committed leaders, both lay and ordained, who work together to give all people in our diocese the opportunity to know and experience God’s love in Jesus Christ.

Together, we are therefore looking for a senior colleague who will work collaboratively and will contribute to the development of our strategic priorities and enable their delivery through effective management of our organisational structures, resources and people.

There are certain gifts and skills that are needed for the appointed candidate to flourish in this broad but vital role, as outlined in the job description and person specification. Fundamentally, I would be delighted to appoint a colleague who, as a passionate, confident Christian leader, will enable the mission of God to thrive in the Diocese of Oxford.

I hope that you will find the information in this Candidate Brief and our website www.oxford.anglican.org helpful.
