About NCVO

NCVO is the largest network for charities and volunteering. We represent and support over 14,000 member organisations, from the biggest household-name charities to the smallest community groups.

We’re an authoritative and influential source of information and expertise on the voluntary sector and volunteering. We work to make sure public policy supports charities, community groups, social enterprises and volunteering.

And we’re a major source of support and advice to our members to help them run their organisations effectively and make an even bigger difference.

Our blog gives a flavour of what matters to NCVO and our members right now.

NCVO has an income of just over £8m per annum and employs around 100 members of staff.

We generate our income through membership fees, commercial services including our popular conference venue, and our ongoing interest in a bank for charities which we established, Charities Aid Foundation. Our latest annual report and accounts provide more information on our finances.

NCVO is governed by a board of 12 trustees, most of whom are elected by our members. Our website contains details of our current trustees.

NCVO operates from modern, accessible offices close to King’s Cross.

What does NCVO do?

Information and guidance

We provide accurate, informed guidance and resources on a wide range of topics from funding and HR to safeguarding and governance. We also provide advice on topical issues that voluntary organisations are grappling with, such as Brexit.

Policy and influencing

We develop robust, actionable policy positions and campaigns that champion the voluntary sector and volunteering by influencing the external policy and regulatory environment.

Among other research, we publish the definitive guide to charity finances - the UK Civil Society Almanac, used by the ONS in calculating charities’ contribution to national accounts. We also publish an annual PEST analysis for the voluntary sector, the Road Ahead, to help organisations with their strategic planning

Training and events

NCVO delivers a range of training and events to support the voluntary sector. We run a busy schedule of training courses and major conferences.

We provide bespoke, expert advice to voluntary and community organisations on a range of topics, such as governance, impact and evaluation. NCVO’s consultancy also includes the highly regarded NCVO Charities Evaluation Service.

Quality standards

We offer a range of quality standards that offer organisations an externally verified seal of approval.

Our history

Founded in 1919, NCVO has supported and celebrated charities and volunteering for a century. We have come a long way since our inception, along the way giving birth to many other organisations that are now household names, including Citizens Advice and Age Concern (now Age UK). Find out more about NCVO’s centenary.

Thanks to the generosity of the public, kindly donating their money and millions of hours of their time every year through volunteering to support the causes they care about, charities are stronger than ever. We're looking forward to supporting them long into the future.
